DID YOU BEGIN ON A SHORTBOARD?
My old man pushed me into a 1 footer on one of his
6’4 thruster’s he shaped himself. It was
a dog but it got me started
WHO OR WHAT FIRST INFLUENCED YOU TO START SURFING?
My dad was a keen surfer and board shaper. I spent my weekend’s checking
surf spots
in his Bedford van or sweeping dust in his shaping bay.
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE BYRON BAY
AREA?
About 3 years. My long time sponsor Ocean & Earth, offered me a job running
their
Shop in Lawson st after I retired from the tour. So I moved up from Broulee.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE BYRON
BAY BOARDRIDERS?
Since I arrived I have surfed in plenty of monthly events and represented the
club in teams events. I am also heavily involved with the annual Easter Classic
as Ocean & Earth are the major sponsor. Great event , run by great people.
COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR PAST COMPETATIVE SURFING?
I spent 10 years on the national and world pro tour so I was lucky enough to
surf most of the world’s best breaks in every major continent. Coming
second at the 99’ Pipe Masters was a highlight.
A MOST MEMORABLE SURF SESSION ?
1998, on a secret south coast reef 8-10 feet like
pipeline , with only a few mates. Haven’t seen
it break like that since.
MEMORABLE SURFING INCIDENT? e.g sharks, wipeouts
I got sucked over the falls backwards at Teahupoo
during a heat against Sunny Garcia. Hit the reef hard
, cut my shoulder and put a huge hole in my board. If
I hit my head I would be gone.]
WORST SURFING INJURY?

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SATISFY YOUR HUNGER AFTER A
BIG SESSION IN THE WATER?
Sushi Train or Subway. Hogs Breath Café have the best steak’s.
PREFERED PUB OF CHOICE.
Beachie. No better atmosphere or set up anywhere in the world I reckon.

I’m following the Queensland Championship circuit. If I was still a junior,
I’d be all over the Ocean & Earth / Hot Buttered Pro Junior in Narrabeen
coming up in October with $6000 on offer for 1st place. I’m looking forward
to the Easter Classic as well.
