NAME: Jenny Boggis
NICKNAME: Jen, J.B, Boggis, Boggy, Bogas, Boggo, Jenza
HOME BEACH: Belongil, Wreck
OCCUPATION: Professional Surfer, Casual waitress
YEARS SURFING: 11 Years

WHERE DID YOU FIRST LEARN TO SURF?
“Belongil beach, Watego’s beach and inside the Pass”

DID YOU BEGIN ON A SHORTBOARD?

“ I began standing up on a bodyboard and a single fin foam board which was more like an esky than a surfboard.
I found it in belongil creek and my cat used to sharpen its claws on it so it didn’t look very good. I then progressed onto longboards with Rusty Miller.”

WHO OR WHAT FIRST INFLUENCED YOU TO START SURFING?
“Growing up in Byron and living just down the road from the beach led me to always have involvement at the beach. Mum and Dad always took us kids to the beach when we were growing up. Dad is a professional fisherman so I was always fishing and hanging with him. My brother surfed so I think I got my first idea to surf from that.
Mum and Dad bought me my first board.”

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE BYRON BAY AREA?
“I was born in Byron Bay hospital and have lived in Byron my whole life. My family have been in the area a long time, especially my dad who has lived in Byron his whole life.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE BYRON BAY BOARDRIDERS?
“I have been involved with Byron Bay Boardriders for a long time. I remember being really nervous going to my first B.B.B competition. The guys in the club were so encouraging and I feel really greatful to of had such great support growing up.”

HAS BEING INVOLVED WITH A HIGHLY REGARDED BOARDRIDING CLUB IN AUSTRALIA PUSHED YOUR SURFING TO NEW LEVELS BOTH COMPETITIVELY AND WHEN YOUR FREESURFING?
“It definitely put the competitive side into my surfing by introducing what competition was and what it was about. I caught the competition bug and loved it. The club was and is there to take the steps towards bigger and greater events. The club competition also teaches you to have fun.”

THERE ARE ALOT OF QUALITY SURFERS IN AND AROUND THE BYRON SHIRE. WHO ARE THE STANDOUTS IN YOUR EYES JEN?
“There are so many excellent surfers in the area. Its awsome to go surfing and always have guys ripping it up, even if they don’t compete. Wilsy, Kieren Perrow, Yerin Brown, Craig Warton, Mat Crisp, Craig Cornish and all the young juniors are shredding and have big futures in the sport eg. Beau Walker, Garret Parkes, to many to name.”

A MOST MEMORABLE SURF SESSION ?
“All my most memorable surf sessions involve the tropics. eg. Maldives, Fiji, Tahiti, Mentawaii’s, I love the vibe, clear, clean, warm water with pumping waves, great food and endless friendships. I also love scoring good uncrowded waves at my local break.”

MEMORABLE SURFING INCIDENT?e.g sharks, wipeouts
(First year in Hawaii) “Getting cleaned up in Hawaii by a huge increasing swell. I somehow got thrown over dry rock without hitting it (someone or something was looking out for me) and was pumped by heaps more waves until finally washing up onto the beach with 3 other tired guy’s. I nearly drowned. (scary stuff!)”

WORST SURFING INJURY?
“Fracturing my kneecap with a fin. Getting it stitched up without a x-ray, therefore not knowing it was fractured. Took along time to heal. Went to Indo and fractured it again thus being in and out of the water for the next 2-3 years.”

16.FAVOURITE PLACE TO SATISFY YOUR HUNGER AFTER A BIG SESSION IN THE WATER?
“WAHOO’S MEXICAN in California, Bay Kebabs, Brumby’s bakery, anywhere with good food. At home I love to make what I feel like at that time.”

PREFERED PUB OF CHOICE.
“Beach Hotel, I always have fun there with crew that you know, good music and fun, friendly atmosphere. You CAN actually find locals there.”

BEST PLACE TO PURCHASE ALL YOUR SURFING NEEDS?
“My bedroom and garage, because I get everything given to me being a spoilt professional surfer, so its never to hard to find what I need. But all the surfshops are great and helpful in Byron.”

SPONSORS/SUPPORTERS?
Voodoo Dolls clothing and accessories, T&C surfboards, Dirty Dog Eyewear, Aloe Up suncare, Surf Aids.”

ANY UPCOMING EVENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO MENTION?
“Heading off to Hawaii for the final 2 WQS events for this year. Then it all starts again in January for next years season.”

Thank you for your time Jen.
