Byron Bay Holiday Guide Archives :. Endless Desire

by Father Rex Hackett

Four elements make up a human, the physical, the intellectual, the emotional, and the spiritual.

In these times of economic change, social stress and insecurity people are seeking a sense of order in their lives. Attempts to satisfy these cravings and find the key to true happiness often fall short of being satisfied. If you win a hundred dollars, you regret you didn't win a thousand. If you have an adequate home, you want a bigger and better one.

The Hindus call this trait the circle of endless desires. You can get the new car and the big home and all the trappings of conventional success and still feel like you are missing something. All the great religions of the world are centred on the human longing for the infinite which can only be completed when the spirit is set free from its human dimensions and united with this source from which it came.

"Thou hast made us for thyself oh god, and our hearts are restless, till they rest in you" ...
Saint Augustine.

Life is a cycle, we begin from the infinite and the journey is only complete when we are once again reunited. The beauty of nature is the expression of the beauty of the infinite. As we beome immersed in the natural environment here we can be led to an experience of its original source: the infinite, who some call god.
