Celebrating the Big Scrub and its restoration
Each September rainforest carers gather from near and far for Big Scrub Rainforest Day, Australia's largest annual landcare information and education event. As well as being heaps of fun there's the excellent opportunity to learn about Australia's rainforests from leading experts. Biologists, botanists, ecologists and other scientists are on hand providing walks, talks and presentations on rainforest flora and fauna and the latest conservation techniques.
The range of activities provides something for everything from the official opening with traditional owners the Wiybal– speaking people of the Bundjalung Nation and dancers to early morning birds of the rainforest tours, workshops on rainforest restoration, farm forestry, plant propagation and identification. Music and the wide variety of food and information stalls create a festival atmosphere. And we shouldn't forget the eco philosophy, yoga in the rainforest sessions or the children's activities that run all day.
Big Scrub Rainforest Day is pivotal in educating and networking regional landcare groups, volunteers and landowners. The event provides a chance for everyone to be inspired to get involved in hands on work for the environment by checking out what other groups and environmentally orientated businesses are up to. It’s also a great opportunity to keep up to date with best practice bush regeneration knowledge and practices.
Big Scrub Rainforest Day is an inspiring annual gathering and everyone is invited to join the community in celebrating the Big Scrub at Rocky Creek Dam, inland from byron bay and 15kms Northwest of Lismore.. Hope to See You There!
Established in 1999 Big Scrub Rainforest Day is held in September each year. To obtain a program and more information visit: www.rainforestrescue.org.au or phone Kelvin Davies on 02 6629 1395. |
