Plans for a major development at Byron Bay are expected to be known today when environmentalists and the local council meets the owners of the land, the Becton Corporation.

Earlier this year, the NSW Government refused Becton's plans for the 80 hectare prime beachfront site, because of environmental concerns.

Since then, a series of meetings between the developer and local interest groups have been held to try to determine what can be built on the site.

Conservationist Dailan Pugh says today's final meeting will be crucial.

"Becton has delayed this final meeting for over two months from when it was meant to occur, so we're very concerned about these delays and this is the last scheduled meeting and it's at this point that we will decide whether there can be any sort of compromise reached between the various parties."

Talks between a developer and local interest groups over a controversial development at Byron Bay have reached a stalemate.

The Becton Corporation wanted to put 379 holiday homes on a site just north of the town, but the NSW Government rejected the plan on environmental grounds.

The managing director of Becton, Hamish McDonald, says Becton has already reduced its proposal, but at a meeting last Friday that plan was knocked back.

"Given that the numbers that we're promoting are less than existing consents that are held on the property and are half of what we're talking about before, I don't think there's a lot of opportunity to reduce further," he said.

"You know it's a disappointing outcome, not entirely unpredictable, we'll go and have a think."
