a good thing too...actually at least the site they want to develop is open country
but the new development at belongil, surely is a complete example of why becton should/should not be blocked.
it is a very important example of the cynical hypocritical ethos around byron these days.
i lived in the rainforest near suffolk when that horrific rape of the environment occured in the melaleuca swamp by the golf course.
complimenti arseholes.
that to the council and the developer.
I spent hours and hours collecting displaced tree frogs, snakes including a really rare charcoal coloured sub species of brown snake that came into my garden and relocating them to cumbebin, belongil and grays lane. even though i had no idea if these sub species could survive there. i still havent been able to locate the tree frog in any scientific publication but know that it lives in melaleucas. there was also another that seemed to prefer the ground in the leaf litter. also no pictures exist of this one either.
the nearest similiar habitat i could find was at brokenhead and lennox.
i guess that a species survey is just not part of the mullim based council.
the day the state government decided to amalgamate byron with mullim they knew what they were doing..
still even the tradgedy of suffolk had its funny moments with my beat up falcon wagon on gas attracting a small colony of tree frogs and black tree ants. which often enjoyed a ride to the pass or to woolies.
so after the environmental debacle passed i no longer felt like i wanted to see that ugly development everyday so i moved to belongil and lo and behold brothers and sisters if the council had given permisssion for another atrocity next to the old belongil beachouse. i was even more horrified to find out that the palms that graced the site had been sold to china. when the palms came down sure enough came the insects and treefrogs they housed mostly again into my old falcon. and the house.
another set of treefrogs unique. but get this the reason they were able to pull down those bangalow palms and some other palms were that they were not native to belongil...how incredible how greedy how stupid. no-one thought to check to see if species native to belonbgil actually lived in them which is always the case. and one very distressed tree python on my verandah was living proof. thought i had moved away from all that..not belongil too. so being a resident of byron 6 years but on and off for 15, i thought poo poo if these no-name developers can clear land and displace loacl species what can we do.? congratualtions we stopped becton and macdonalds but let everybody else through the backdoor.
and that golfcourse land a belongil..at least its already cleared but byron needs that land for a new town away from the greedy concrete centre.
we need some sanity and lateral thinking here.
i now have moved to calabria but will be moving back to byron in the next few months watch this space
