The federal Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony, says it is now impossible for him to hold on to his northern New South Wales seat of Richmond.

With 95 per cent of the vote counted, Mr Anthony is about 320 votes behind Labor's Justine Elliot.

Mr Anthony says a growing Green vote is making it a tough seat for the Nationals to win.

He says he has lost his seat partly because of strong opposition in some parts of Richmond to the Government's decision to join the war in Iraq.

"We're about 320 votes behind the Labor candidate so that puts us on 49.8, Labor's on 50.2," he said.

"It looks like later on today when all the votes are being counted, it'll be impossible for me to hold the seat of Richmond for the Government."

The loss ends a dynasty for the Anthony family, as Larry Anthony is the third generation to hold Richmond. He has held the seat since 1996.

Mr Anthony says Richmond voters will suffer with a Labor MP.

"They'll end up in the political wilderness," he said. "In the past, being a minister in the Government we were in the front of the queue.

"What we are going to find now is there are no queues. Because if you are a Labor member in Opposition in this type of seat, then it is really difficult to get the ear of government, or really to get a lot of influence."
